Year in Review – Around the Property

As I look around the property, I see lots of stuff that still needs to be done. But looking back, I realize we’ve enjoyed many things on the 6.66 acres that is our Livin’ The 10 Farnch.

God’s Canvas

First, the sunrises and sunsets here are absolutely fantastic. You can see them all in the God’s Canvas posts.

The Country Life

The kids got sick right around Easter last year, and we didn’t make it to church. We still wanted to have a family celebration, so we had an Easter Egg “Hunt” here on the farnch. Melissa and I took plastic eggs, filled them with treats, then strung them on branches in the woods in the back yard. Eryk, Iain and Macy then got to go “on the hunt” for eggs…with their BB guns.

Back to Basics

When June rolled around, it got hot. We needed a way to cool down. Our temporary solution was a cheap easy set pool. The kids loved it, and even we adults enjoyed relaxing in the cool water. In fact, one hot-but-breeze evening, I soaked in the pool for a while. When I got out, I sat in my rocking chair on the porch to dry off. The evaporative effect of the breeze against the water actually gave me a slight chill…on a 100+ degree day.

The Right Tool for the Job

Having lived in the city most of our lives, we knew we would need to acquire some common farm-type implements. Mom and Dad’s housewarming gift to us was a commercial-grace Snapper Zero-Turn mower, and, man, has it been a blessing. We used it to cut pathways and walking trails through the front and back pastures, and to generally keep the rest of the place neat and tidy.

When we sold our home, we used some of the proceeds to get a truck, Rocky. Rocky has pulled our animal trailer to bring home Chocolate, Vanilla, Turtle and Bryan; Mocha and Chip; and Beau and Mercy. Rocky has also hauled (literally) tons of stuff for our building projects, especially the outdoor kitchen. In addition to being really useful around the farnch, I have to admit, I just like driving a big truck.

Of course, no farnch is complete without a tractor. In late October, we visited the local Kubota dealership, Ewald Kubota, to get smart on tractors. They were having a sale, with some good incentives and financing, and we were able to get everything we wanted – front-end loader, brush-hog, box blade, and grapple – for a good price.

Infrastructure

One of the things we haven’t had to do a lot of is infrastructure. That was one of the things that was very attractive about this particular property. It was already fenced and cross-fenced. There were already several irrigation spigots throughout the property, making it pretty easy to get water to the animals. And there were several shelters already on the property – a carport, garage, loafing shed with tack room and chicken coop, and a front barn. There’s more to do…there always is on a farnch. But having a lot of the infrastructure already in place enabled us to “get farnching” a lot faster than if we’d had to build all that stuff along the way.

The View

Every now and then it’s good to relax and ponder a bit. Out here at Livin’ The 10, we have lots of opportunity to enjoy masterful works of art, crafted by God Himself. Below, another beautiful sunrise.

Don’t know what these flowers out by the road are. Their green pointy leaves remind me of holly, but the flowers are a gorgeous, bright, tangy yellow.

As Melissa and I were out walking in the back pasture the other day, we came across this little guy, right there on the “interactive edge” between the pasture and the woods. Looks like he’s a variety of pencil cactus.

And to close out our brief day of pictures, the view of the sunset from where we’re starting the pond.

Donkey Hôte

As I’ve mentioned before, we have the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets here at Livin’ The 10.

The other morning, I went for a short walk around one of the front paddocks, and along came Mocha and Chip, sauntering down the path from their barn over to the water. I snapped a quick picture of them in the frosty grass – right before they started harassing me for something to eat. They are nothing if not persistent!

All of the pictures in this post are sunrises.

Don’t have much commentary.

Just enjoy the sunrise photos.

Star Light, Star Bright

It’s amazing to me how beautiful the night sky is out here in the country. In the city, you just can’t see through all the street lights to truly see the majesty of creation flung across the sky. I’ve posted a lot of sunrise and sunset pictures in the past, partly because it’s not easy to capture the beautiful, starry nights we have out here in the country with my cell phone. Tonight, though, things were a little different. The sun had just set – you can still see some of the last remnants of sunset near the bottom of the picture – and it was still casting enough light into the sky for the phone to snap a decent picture of the not-yet-starry night.

God’s Canvas

We have the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets out here at Livin’ The 10 in New Berlin. Truth be told, it’s pretty much the same sunrise and sunset that you get in San Antonio…but there’s just something different about the view of God’s canvas from out in the country.

Above, the sunset bounces off the bottoms of puffy clouds. And although you can’t see it in the picture, it continued all the way to the eastern sky. Below, a fiery sunrise outlines the trees as the donkeys enjoy a morning stroll in the front paddock.

Above, a cloudless sunrise. Below, an eastern sunset reminiscent of a chalk painting in pastel shades.

Above, one of my favorite fiery sunrises, bursting on the horizon, tossing deep purples on the clouds. Below, one of my favorite “tequila” sunsets, as the setting sun casts warm oranges on the wispy clouds. Yes, they’re actually Agave plants, but “Agave sunset” just doesn’t have the same pizzazz.

Above, an incredible sunrise of deep reds and purples. Below, another sunrise of bright oranges and yellows.

Spider Webs

The other morning, as I walked to open the gate for the day, I saw some amazing spider webs dotting the front pasture. The morning dew bathed them, and when the first rays of sunshine crept across the horizon, the pasture lit up with these beautiful creations.

In addition to being prolific with their webs, I’ve noticed country spiders spin webs with a much higher tensile strength than their city counterparts. Accidentally walking into one of these instantly reminds me of that scene in Lord of the Rings where Frodo gets stuck in Shelob’s lair…very…difficult…to…get…it…all…off…of…me.
